Why do different elements have different properties?

Yeah, no shit. I get that. But why does have different protons make the elements so different?? I also get that the electron orbital shapes are different depending on how many protons there are, but why does that make the elements so different just because the orbiting electrons are in a slightly different configuration?

I just don't get it.
