I need some input or advice on my situation. So, I recently have just been accepted into a top ten veterinarian school. I know veterinarian is STEM, but it is not the kind of STEM most people talk about on this sub. If you are curious about my undergrad, I majored in chemistry. Okay, back to the main point I am not sure if I want to take the MCAT and go to medical school or become a veterinarian. My parents want me to go to medical school. They see a career as a veterinarian as a joke because it does not pay nearly as much as a doctor does. My parents say you will be in a lot of student debt and will not pay it off later in life than if you were to become a doctor. I am not sure what to do. I always loved animals and being around them. I am not sure if I should forget Veterinarian school and listen to my parents' advice to take the MCAT to become a doctor or become a veterinarian and be poor?

As an outsider to both those fields, I'd say be a vet. Nearly everyone with a few extra brain cells wants to become a doctor and every middle class parent expects such. The amount of people trying to get into med school is quite saturated and after fighting the competition you're in a job where you rarely get weekends, abused by the people you're trying to help, deal with tiktok nurses and face 12 hour shifts.
You already like animals and the student/job market for it isn't nearly as saturated. The animals don't hate you, you get weekends or more with your own practice and work 9-5 like normal people. Another anon mentioned stubborn owners but that can be helped if you walk people through the logic of your advice and help them understand WHY they should listen to you.
If you do become a vet though, can you do some good and pay extra care to small animals like birds, rodents and even fish? Seems vets are eager to put those animals down but will risk life and limb for a dog.

There's no reason for them to. Over 80% of doctors aren't even a part of it within the US. They cockblocked universal health care, and don't represent the needs or cares of most physicians, and have a hilarious history of racism that you would think people would have shunned them for. I have no idea why they're even considered an authority on anything anymore.

Still, a lot more people try to become human doctors than animal doctors. Maybe there's a demand for it because only so many people actually qualify to be doctors after going through school? Again, I'm an outsider so can't say for sure.
