Why is work forcedisplacement and not forcedistance?

Let’s say an object like a car needs 2e amounts of energy to accelerate forward a specific displacement
And another car with the same mass and acceleration move forward half the displacement of car 1 and back again with the same acceleration
Wouldn’t both objects need the same amount of energy to travel the same amount of distance?

Because distance is an absolute measurement while displacement is a relative measurement.
If you were to drag an object a 2 meters in front of you, you would accomplish 2*F Joules of work. If you dragged it back to your original position, no work was actually done.
If distance was the measurement chosen, you would have accomplished 4*F Joules of work, yet you didn't actually do any work, the object started and stopped in the same place.

That’s like saying if an object like earth is orbiting around the sun and at one point ends up at the same position as its first cycle then no work by the centripetal force of the sun was done even though there’s clearly a force travelling a distance present that does reduce some energy the sun had in some sort of format

Just sounds wrong, work is the byproduct of transferring energy and both objects are transferring the same amount of energy into moving forces even if those forces are moving in different directions at different intervals. To say one object hasn’t done any work is the same thing as saying no energy was transferred even though that’s literally wrong
Wouldn’t a better model the time define work as a displacement variable that can have positives and negatives than a scalar?
