prestige makes a difference when applying to the top-20 graduate schools or so. I think anywhere in the top 50 undegraduate universities and you should be fine.

Okay. Are you going into academia after grad school, industry, or government?

Like the other poster said, prestige matters some, but it isn’t the end all be all. Top 50-100 and you should be fine. Plus, individual programs can matter too, a meh-tier engineering school could have a great computer engineering program.

also another sidenote: im probably going to be on track to be graduating a year or two early. what are some things i can do to try and get into a decent grad school?

Also, consider the school's specific focus on the exact part of the field (not major) you want to work in. I go to a school that's so-so prestige-wise, but has a very innovative and well-funded research program in my specific area of interest. As a result, I have an undergraduate research position that has given me a deeper background in my field than I ever would've received at a top 10 engineering school. It remains to be seen how this will translate when applying for jobs/grad school, but I'm effectively working in the same job as an undergrad that I want to when I graduate.

Alright. Just keep your options open. Once you get yourself into academia it can be hard to get out. The reverse is not necessarily true, in fact many institutions like having people with industry knowledge coming back to teach.
