they're just competent enough that we can make reliable predictions about groups based on their average iq, but not reliable enough for solving disputes like "who's smarter, einstein or hawking?"

Remarkably good actually. If you willingly take an IQ test that means you're a dimwit (you can't be insecure for no reason). If you're taking an IQ test because you're being made to do it that means you're a dimwit (people wouldn't test unless they had doubts).
