I know ? is between 3 and 4, but why are its next digits 1,4,1,5 and so on? Do they even have a clear pattern?

That's just the way it is. The circumference of a circle divided by its diameter is just exactly that and that's how it is. Simple as that. There's no really a better explanation.

Because you can inscribe a polygon with area 3.1415 into a unit circle and you can inscribe the unit circle into a polygon with area 3.1416
