It may take a while but the best way to improve your intuition is, instead of rather just focusing on equations and memorization of them, take time to actually think about what's going on. This will help you realize if a certain answer makes sense or not.

Intuition is tacit knowledge you've picked up but can't explain. Having high IQ ("talent") helps with picking it up faster, and for forming more complex intuitions, but at the base level it's really just a matter of exposure to training data.

meme answers. the way you form intuitions in math is the same as when you form intuitions in basketball, starcraft or picking up girls. by doing it.

you won't reason your way into an intuition, they're different things. having insight helps, but you need to practice it and apply it, that way it will stick and be used by your brain automatically to suggest potential solutions long after the conscious thought process has slipped from your memory.

It comes with time. If you read Lieb and Loss build up to monotone convergence theorem isolated you’d think “no I’d never be able to create this”, but if you then go and read a non-modern-shit analysis text like Kolmogorov you’ll see all the ideas can be found in more basic ideas you would understand immediately.

What the professor means by "strong mathematical intuition" is probably his polite way of referring to intelligence and insinuating that you might not have it. I would confront him that and then just disregard his passive aggressiveness. He probably hates his career and is trying to dissuade others while he makes all the big bucks.
