Mental disorders can be grouped by various categories, but one way is by WHY the disorder was recognized and described the way it is. Some are based on objective observations of symptoms that are constant regardless of culture. Some are based on the etiology. Some on specific genes. Personality disorders are the least objective and justified group of mental disorders, because they are basically just where you draw the line for certain behaviors between what is normal and healthy for members of your society and what is not. They have their uses as designations, but they are not based on anything solid like etiology, consistent patterns, etc. That is why treatment is difficult. People with different problems end up lumped together under the same “personality disorder”. The problems are real (well, usually), but the way we look at can be a bit arbitrary.
