Why do EOD wear so much protection on everything but the hands? I they're not covered because you obviously need to use them to dispose of a bomb, but what's the point of it all if you lose your hands? Practically ends you life, might as well wear nothing at all.

Because they need to be able to very quickly and deftly manipulate tools and wires and you can't do that through a pair of heavy kevlar and foam gloves. Imagine trying to reconnect the connecting wire for your computer fan while wearing a pair of oven mitts.

It depends on the magnitude of the blast and their distance from it. Modern vests use a combination of kevlar and acoustic absorbing materials. If it blows when you're two feet away you're fucked regardless, but a dozen paces and an EOD suit can be the difference between surviving or not.
