Physics Research Questions (grad student)

Hi /sci/,

So I'm about to finish my first year of my PhD program. My interest is hep-th/nucl-th. I've been talking with a potential advisor (read some of his recent work and really enjoyed a talk he gave) who is supposed to be an expert in the field. We have a potential project we've been talking about to get me started in the field that I think is interesting and relevant to what i want to do. However, long term I'm worried our interests might clash.

His primary focus nowadays is developing numerical frameworks rather than analytical stuff whereas I am pretty much interested in only analytical work with computational stuff when needed. He's been accommodating but I'm worried if I stick with him then later on I might pigeon hole myself into comp phys bullshit.

Should I see where this advisor/project takes me or jump ship now and find a new one.
