When modern astrophysics got down measurements of galaxy masses according to Newton's laws, relative movements and such, they noticed that something was not right, for the galaxies to move relative to one another like they do, the universe must be much more massive than what is apparent
So, instead of questioning the assumptions that led them to this math, they came up with dark matter, which is assumed to be non-baryonic matter which does not interact in any way with ordinary matter like yo and me - except through gravity
Dark energy instead is a factor that should be accounted when calculating the rate of expansion of the universe, which could just be a cosmological constant, could be an actual force, nobody knows - in this case too, it's something that we cannot perceive but needs to be factoed in for the cosmo as we observe it to work as our math predicts
So you see, when astrophysicists noticed that 1+1 gave 3, instead of assuming one of the 1 should actually be a 2, they came up with the "dark 1" (notice how it's black in the comic) - which might turn out to be the start of something, might turn out to be a massive misunderstanding of astrophysics
