The reason why it’s debated wether it’s real or not is simply because we can only see the effects of it but can’t interact with it directly due to its properties having a “negative mass”. Think of dark matter less as a real form of matter but rather as a model used to describe an observable phenomena, a model that’s still being tested and studied
