At the moment I see it as a way to explore some of the structure of the eye by way of the changes in the afterimage. Color is the first to fade, everything is bright but darker words on a page stand out later, and similar observations.
I am also starting to recognize these afterimages just as I look around. I would compare it to that old lumosity excercise space junk. It was a bunch of objects on the screen for a few seconds and after it would ask you how many objects of which color were there. Not sure if that will grow stronger or not. I have only done the exercise three times today.
