Fundamentally there is no time. Time is an emergent property, emerging from interactions of different system with each other with accordance to the laws of nature.
It can't go backwards because there is nothing to go back to. Past no longer exists.

In a completely empty universe or a universe with maximum level of entropy time would not exist.
