>>14279856In what way? The only actual problem with fracking is from companies that don't maintain the well casings properly but that's true of all drilling. Because fracking uses old wells, the well casings can be in worse condition but that doesn't have to be the situation. Companies that do things right will repair and keep the casings in good condition. Companies that cut corners have things leak through the casings, which will contaminate the soil and ground water close to the surface. This is 100% preventable and those who fail to maintain their well casing should be punished appropriately.
Due to regulatory capture, enforcement is lax and punishments mild. But that's the fault of bad governance and not of fracking if done as it should be. Don't hate on the concept of fracking, it's fine. Hate the "corporations are people my friend" ideology that grips much of the western world and allows things like regulatory capture to exist.
>But earthquakes!Only 2% of induced earthquakes (a small subset of all earthquakes) come from fracking. The other 98% come from the absolutely astonishingly stupid but permitted practice of wastewater disposal in abandoned wells. What idiot thought that was a good idea? It's not even wastewater from fracking, it's from other industrial processes where they figured it was easier to get rid of waste products by injecting them into old dry wells than to actually treat the wastewater as is done in areas without wells.
