What is /sci/'s opinion on the book "A Mind for Numbers"? Is it a good book to better develop your mind for math or is it a bunch of nonsense that wont help you in your math career.

Yes. It's a very useful guide that turns the recent discoveries in cognitive science, pedagogy and neurology into practical advice. Almost everyone will benefit from it.

That said two kinds of people will not benefit from in. One is people who serendipitously are already doing all the things the book explains. Second is people who will not do the things in the book. /sci/ has a lot of the second, largely because those people believe intelligence is fixed and you cannot learn any faster.

Its a very good book and I go back to it now and then, I always scraped by math but was never quite adept at it and as I speak still relearning all my algebra. This book showed me the brute force method that works for other subjects doesnt apply so I cant just wing it in math and you need to take a breather no matter how much of a smart boy you think you are. Recommend it to everyone really and the author herself is a perfect example of how most people arent really bad at math its a wrong approach that might be encouraged from outside factors like school or yourself. Made me respect mathematics even more honestly.

I think the idea presented as "chunking" is very well suited to mathematics (and really all learning in general) and the tips for doing so are nice. Essentially, its the kind of mind mapping that dismissed when I was in middle/high school because it felt to useless and fluffy for an enlightened STEMlord like myself. But later on in college it turned out to be exactly what I needed. Also helped reduce the feeling that math is a collection of disparate ideas.

Mindmapping is a very clumsy implementation of chunking. And the way we are thought it completely missed the cognitive and epistemological behind chunking.

Chunks are connections between facts that give them meaning. For example in linear algebra the definition of a pivot is in itself an almost pointless fact. To become knowledge it must be connected to other facts, like that pivots equals solutions to vars, if there are less pivots than vars there are free vars etc.

Cognitively the brain can hold only 5 to 9 items in working memory, later discovered to be 5 to 9 items formed into 3 or 4 chunks. If you don't chunk things you can only remember 3 to 4 facts at one time. If you're doing anything abstract and technical like mathematics or coding, you are lining up hundreds of small actions in order. So you need a very robust and comprehensive memory pattern made up of strong chunks to do it.

More like linking nodes in a linked list. Not a lot of research has been done on the data structure of the brain but it really is a fascinating subject. For example recognition must some kind of hash map, because when we see something that pattern instantly retrieves information without iterating through every bit of information we have. Recollection seems more like a graph, because each node is connected to other nodes with no restrictions.

at first you think about everything you need to do (close the door, check the rear mirror, unlock the brakes, start ignition, let the motor heat a little, see what's around you, etc.)

but after the 30th time you done this you don't even think about it, you just do everything on one go
