The brain notices there's a tree - builds a model - you're now aware of the tree. The brain notices there's a self - you're now aware of the self. Self awareness is simple, only consciousness is mysterious.
Who is this observer looking at models built by the brain? Why does this observer know how certain qualia should feel like? A color is just a signal in the brain. A sound is just a signal in the brain. Yet the qualia produced when the brain tells consciousness that there is a color, or a sound, is completely different. Why is it so drastically different if they are only signals? How many qualia are there? Where do they come from?
