Which books (or any other source of information for that matter) should I read to get a solid foundation in statistics?
PS. Such foundation would be the means to the end of applying this knowledge to quantitative finances and econometrics

none. its just math. you can go average / mean result and say on average . add the total number of instances together then divide by total number of instances. duh

or you can take the sample group lets say convicted fellons in america and compare vs the total number of adult men or total population

statistics isnt about models forecasting results until you get baseline figures. you also want figures over time at desirably even increments

if you really want to be a quant then go to school and major in something like stats, math, or cs and get hired at a firm
it's very unlikely you're going to generate "alpha" on your own and a lot of the research that goes into it is very very time consuming, so you might as well be getting paid to do it
