so wavelengths hit the eye, and a signal is sent to the brain, and the brain produces an experience of seeing a color... but where is the actual physicality of the color itself? Does it even exist as a real physical thing?

It's just arguing semantics.
The EM radiation an object emits or doesn't absorb, the EM radiation from an object which the human eyes react to, the eyes' reaction to the aforementioned, and the brain's reaction to the eyes' reaction to specific EM radiation, are different things with different physical things associated. Yet they all can accurately be called "color."

Violet is about twiche the frequency of red thus it has reddish tint in it. So the frequency has the color encoding but brains does the decoding and the sensation.
