Fred brings home 100 kg of potatoes, which (being purely mathematical potatoes) consist of 99% water. He then leaves them outside overnight so that they consist of 98% water. What is their new weight?

If we assume the weight percentage of water reduced purely to vaporization (or water being removed in general), then 50 kg as thats the only way for the other 1 kg of potato to account for 2% of the total weight.

There's no way of knowing, we don't know how much the water ways relative to the other components of the potato. It could be that the water is weightless and that the remaining initial 1% makes up the 100kg, or it could be that the 99% that is water makes up the 100 kg, likely the answer is somwhere in between. But we can't say for sure.

So first he has 1kg of solid potato and 99kg of water
Then he has 1kg of solid potato because potato doesn't evaporate, and 49kg of water to get to 2%/98% potato/water ratio

so 50kg is the answer

1 + 99 = 100

1 + x = y
x = 0.98y

1 = 0.02y
y = 50

x water / y potato = 98/100
y potato = 100/98 * x water
So it can be any weight, obeying this linear equation. Eg:
x water = 10 kg => y potato = 10.20408... kg

From the text we get
x + y = 100kg
y/(x+y) = 0.99
z/(x+z) = 0.98

Now we solve the system
y = 0.99 * 100kg = 99kg
x = 100kg - y = 99kg
z = 0.98 (1kg + z)
0.02 z = .98kg
z = 50 *.98kg = 49kg

So the new weight is x+z = 50kg.

Originally there was 99kg of water in the potatoes.
This 99kg has now become 98% of the total mass
so (99 / 98%) x 100 = 101,024 kg
Aparantly there has grown a total amount of 1,024kg of fungus on your potatoes.

it depends on what the original 1% was. we dont know how much of the weight was comprised on that 1%. was it uranium? well thats pretty heavy and would take up more of the original 100 kg of weight

i dont know your formula for theoretical tatoes
