There's been discussion at MSF about building a solar probe that would, as part of its mission, do a solar slingshot maneuver that could get it to something like 0.1% the speed of light. That shit'll get you to the heliopause in about two years.

OP the most realistic option for getting pictures of alpha centauri is the Breakthrough Starshot proposal https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breakthrough_Starshot
Basically using massive ground based laser arrays to accelerate a swarm of tiny probes equipped with solar sails to ~20% of lightspeed.

Almost all of the world's supply of neon gas comes from Ukraine and it's an essential requirement for space lasers. That's why the Soviets built up so much neon gas production capacity. Not sure how easy it would be to produce it elsewhere. Maybe it is and we've never had reason to do so since it was so cheap from Ukraine.

You could use a laser powered light sail to get up to 0.1 c, which would mean you could get a probe on the order of grams to your target in 40 years.

Or you could build a gigantic telescope in space and see the planets from our solar system, and that could take 30 years.

You can make small microsensors and make them go there at almost the speed of light, like 99% the speed of light or something like that. It was proposed once, but they never did it, because these probes would be almost completely useless because they need to be very small
I remember there was an article about it, but I don't remember the name

Like i mean blast a planetary or asteroid surface with radio waves and progress up increasing complexity until a probe is built.
imagine the egyptian pyramids were built out of increasing complexity originating from radio wave blasts and instructions with the sole purpose of creating a probe to beam info back to source. It's like the progression of humanity which originated from what seems to be rocks an water etc

If we were to do that it would be worth developing exotic propulsion, something like a fission fragment or magnetoplasmadynamic engine. With either of those it wouldn't take that long compared to chemical engines. Can't say exactly how long as neither of those things exist except on paper.
