It's both. The math for Relativity, QED, fluid dynamics etc. existed before it was applied to physics.

Guaranteed none of you have any idea what you're on about.
The reason for considering string theory seriously is that from very simple principles (considering a quantised relativistic one dimensional object) you get a very large amount of nice properties coming out, not least of which is gravity. Because it gives you so many nice properties that you would want in a candidate theory for unifying all the forces physics has felt compelled to take it seriously even when the experimental evidence for it is lacking.
