think about it like this:
you have data that appears to fit an exponential curve y = a^x.
you derive the fitting function only to find it is vertically offset from the data by some amount.
so you correct the function to y = a^x + b.
notice that you cannot fit the data with a linear or quadratic function. the data clearly follows an exponential curve.
such as it is with fitting dark matter gravity effects into galactic/cosmological models.
