Why is pitch-yaw-roll commonly used in 3d graphic design when two angles can describe any direction in a 3d space?

Oh, also, you can align an object with a given direction, but you could also rotate it around the corresponding axis, so you need another angle.

because you need to describe more than just direction some times, you need orientation too. For example, you have an airplane that's going east, pointing down 60 degrees, and is upside down.

How many degrees of freedom do you need to identify a point on a sphere?
2, latitude and longitude, but diversity hires programmers don't know this.

Oh like that. Well in that case it's obvious, you also need the rotation of the object, not just its direction.
Also, pitch/yaw/roll is usually not used directly, we use transformation matrices or quaternions in real life.

It's not just about 3d space, it's also about vectors and all the other factors that flight involves.

are you sure? if you pitch 180 degrees, you are upsdie down, and can yaw 180 degrees to face in your original direction but upside down.
