I don't think science or engineering is the right field for someone like yourself, and that has nothing to do with age. In order to excel at science you need to be open-minded and someone who is willing to question common sense assumptions about the world, not the type of person who just absorbs conventional viewpoints and traditional values. Military veterans and police officers tend to have very conventional and closed-minded views about things like "law and order" and "defense" and "freedom". These sorts of viewpoints and values are incompatible with scientific practice.
If you want to work in STEM or tech, then something like cybersecurity or systems administration would probably be better for someone like yourself, rather than the more scientifically intensive areas of computer science or engineering.
