I remember reading here about some woman working in a lab curing HIV decided to make superHIV just out of curiosity. Once she reported the results to her management, they were horrified at what she created and immediately ordered all samples burned to eliminate the threat. It is seriously that easy if you know what you are doing, just create an easily spreadable virus that that makes all humans sterile, release it in some tourist hotspot or some major airport and mankind is history.
We already know how shit people are at containing viruses since many countries still allowed billionaires, immigrants and students to travel even in the worse of covid, to say nothing of people defying quarantines to go partying and getting their hair cut. The only question is how effective your virus is.
