Some evolutionary psychologists say that it's because they get more access to resources to take care of their offspring, but higher status in hunter gatherer societies (aka humans in their natural state) doesn't necessarily imply more resources, all modern hunter-gatherers are egalitarian, also if you know about economics the generation of wealth is highly dependent on division of labor, and there was almost no division of labour in hunter-gatherers, most men hunted, so there was no excess "wealth" that could be accumulated by some men in the tribe
