Aren't there billions of people who don't believe in what scientists say? And even among the scientists, aren't there many differing opinions ("sects")? Isn't his like you said with the denominations in religions?
I think the Torah (includes the sages as well) gives a pretty good explanation for why that is, the yetzer hara, the evil inclination in people, makes them into liars, their ego prohibits them from seeing the truth, some want to fool people to fulfill their desires (see this video on Mormons, one of the many false religions today

So, just because the majority of people are not righteous, and there are many evils in the world (includes lies), that doesn't mean there isn't truth and good.
