Hi frens, looking at this diagram, is it as if I am facing a person, looking at their face, or as if I am behind them, looking at the back of their head? I want to know what this book says but I don’t understand the orientation of this diagram

I am confused cause of this chart here, which says the dorsal is posterior for the horizontal plane, which makes me interpret the OP pic as having the coronal plane as me being behind the person, and the horizontal planes as facing me

the book is bad at describing how the term dorsal changes as you go down the spinal cord
at the head, dorsal refers to the top while caudal refers to the back
however, when you refer to structures below the head, dorsal refers to the back while caudal refers to the bottom, e.g., your ass
so you could be looking at the caudal or rostral side of the brain when looking directly at a coronal cross section, but, when you're directly looking at the horizontal cross section of the vertebrae you could be looking at it from the rostral or caudal side
i'm assuming you're looking at a projection of a motor neuron

Thanks! I appreciate it. Just to double check my understanding, in this diagram the face would be overlaid on top of the brain cutout, as in if this was a person I’d be able to make eye contact with them, rather than standing behind them?

Yes, you are looking at their face.

It shows an afferent pathway (carrying information towards brain)

It shows 3 neurons concerned with carrying information about touch from the body to the postcentral gyrus of your brain

First order neuron is pseudounipolar. It acts as a mechanoreceptor (usually in your skin) and has its body in the dorsal root ganglion. It interacts with the second order neuron

Second order neuron crosses over from right to left (on image) or vice-versa a few levels above the sinapse with first order neuron, Its axon than travels along the spine in the medial lemniscus. and terminates in the ventral posterior nucleus of the thalamus.

Third order neuron goes from the ventral posterior nucleus of the thalamus to the postcentral gyrus of the cortex (primary somatosensory area)

Also, diagram A on this image is complete BS, nobody uses terms rostral and caudal to describe front and back of the brain. We always use anterior and posterior.

Nobody uses dorsal and ventral to describe up or down, we use superior and inferior, who TF wrote this BS?
