Wealth is relative. Poors in the past and poors today have one thing in common: they have masters. The rich have always been masters.
What I mean by this is that to be rich is simply to have enough wealth that one can afford to have retainers, or servants, to perform menial tasks, such as running errands, cooking, cleaning, taking care of the children, etc. This may be indirect, that is it may be such that the rich eat out, or children are sent to nurseries, but the point still remains: the rich are free from such drudgery.
