It's fun to imagine it's just a script spamming those, but when you realize it's 90% some 30 year old guy obsessed with reddit memes and his only response to anything is memes. Is he any more conscious than an AI if he spends 16 hours (probably more) a day on her posting the same variation of reddit made wojaks? So the fact he exist means AI could already be conscious

Maybe if they correctly replicate all the details of a real brain using real matter, at which point it makes a lot more sense to just modify existing organisms.

We'd have to understand consciousness better to be sure. Maybe we'll have more luck experimenting with AI using quantum computers. They could be more comparable to the human brain to a degree with how we process thoughts.

There is research on ephaptic coupling of neuron signals that proposes just that.
I don't think our current models will suffice for that task, GPT-3 for example is still rather stupid and dataset-dependent, but I'm sure the future will produce a feasible model that, enhanced through QC, may develop something we name "consciousness".

It's a machine, not a human, it doesn't matter. Monkeys are smart too and feel things too and we still experiment on them.
Most animals feel things and we still eat them. AIs should not be treated differently

Yes. Try to guess the outcomes of the human brain in certain situations. Human thoughts are often random and unpredictable. Computers on the other hand are easily predictable as they are running off a strict program

I think that's an oversimplification. Just because they appear random to us, does that mean that they are random given sufficient data about the brain? like if you had some sci-fi machine you could look at a brain with, I'm sure you predict exactly what the brain was going to do, just as you would a computer today.

Unless you are saying that brains are somehow magical and unknowable?

That seems like a non-coherent view unless you have some religious form of dualism in mind. Whatever non-physicality you want to attribute to the human brain could be attributed to the computer as well. Reality gives zero fucks about what you categorize as "recreated" or not, because it ultimately means nothing.
