Did you press the air out with a vacuum machine?
Otherwise, if some air is remaining, it will inflate the bag.
What about the bag? Some bags can let air molecules through.
Are you implying that the scarf holds air molecules?

Nah, manually. It's pressed flat, then inflates. It's a freezer bag so it shouldn't let air through(?). Maybe the scarf or fabric softener produce gases? I DON'T KNOW.

Change in humidity from outside to inside the freezer bag? Little bit of lensing/temperature variance so the air inside expands?

Poor seal on the bag?

Bacterial processes chugging along would produce a little off gassing as well.

I think the reason is the following. Since you press the air out in the warm room, the pressure of the warm room doesn't let the bag expand. And the bag seems flat. However, the pressure in the freezer is smaller and not enough to counterbalance the remaining air, so it inflates to the point where all the forces are balanced.

It's not in the freezer, I just used a freezer bag. But that's still a good point, heat expands air. I'll heat the scarf and then bag it, when it cools down the air it contains should contract.
