>>14243907The amount of broscience in this thread is astounding. I can’t be bothered to pick it apart but it’s mostly false.
Dopamine is a neurotransmitter, it’s only job is to pass on action potentials from one neuron to the next. This happens at synapses.
Dopamine does not enter the bloodstream and it isn’t a hormone.
Neuronal pathways in the brain have different neurotransmitters so that they can pass on their signal to the correct neuron. To say dopamine = fun or addiction or whatever is totally bollocks. It’s the same as saying sitting in the car makes the combustion engine start; a non sequitur.
An example: dopamine is used by motor neurons which is why Parkinson patients get levodopa, this increases dopamine production so that the synaptic clefts receives more dopamine opening the post synaptic neuron increasing the chance of passing on the action potential.
The thought that dopamine receptors can be burned out is a half truth. Receptors can be desensitised, but the synaptic cleft has enzymes whose function it is to degrade neurotransmitters stopping receptor activation and thus preventing desensitisation. You’d need continuous activation for a large amount of time to get 1 synaptic cleft desensitised. ( you dont see this in medication that prevents neurotransmitters from leaving the cleft, thus the chance of this occurring in nature is astronomically low).
Conclusion brain pathways are complex, a lack or excess of neurotransmitters can scramble the signals leading to weird states -> jammed cognition.
No fapping will not scramble you at all it’s too short a moment to make any physiological changes.
