On a morning my brain starts slow, but throughout the day it gets faster, and better at problem solving. This constant increase in performance happens for ~16 hours, after which it begins to fall off and performance decreases. To maximize performance for studying, or really anything involving thinking, I've found it's best to start my mornings solving problems, then by the end of the day I'll peak at a higher level than I would have had I not spent the morning problem solving.
I wish I could wake up at the level I am at before bed, where I have my best ideas and breakthroughs. But not even drugs help that much, they just kickstart the process a bit at best. It's like any momentum.
