With real world politicians (not /pol/ mind you) credibility is a very important resource.
Politicians have learned how to exchange, sell, and barter both their own credibility and also the credibility of others.
On the other hand, the world of science, is a world built on trust. Everyone understands that if you try to deceive each other, you'll hurt both the entire science community and likely yourself as well. Because of this understanding, the credibility of science grew.
Once credibility grew large enough, it became noticed by politicians, and was "reaped" by hungry politicians looking for places to source more credibility from. Not all at once. It happens over years, decades even, some areas getting hit harder than others.
But these past years, it's almost as if there's some force out there trying to "burn" all the credibility of science as a whole. Is it to "starve out" hungry politicians. Political rivals looking to weaken their opponents? Or has science entered the cross hairs of the information war that's been going on for the last decade? Or both?
