Also most of the grades are published so I have a rough picture of their work.

But I can't really track them down like that. Of course I'll want to keep in touch with a student that has top grades, is doing projects/research etc. but "talking to classmates" isn't an efficient way of trying to do that.
I should point out that I'm in a no name university and everyone that's actually good at whatever they're doing is going to leave the country. What are the odds I'll actually benefit from talking to classmates thinking about referrals?
