Originally because we were cold and didn't want to scrape our weiner on bushes and rocks

They wear clothes in tribal Africa too. Mainly covering their genitals. It obviously has nothing to do with protecting against cold. For some reason, humans want to cover their genitals. Some cultures more than others, but all at least to some extent.

There is probably some evolutionary reason why people cover their genitals. Clothes like these really can't protect against anything, and these don't look like they're indicating status either.
