To normal people his work was quite important. He invented tons of new drugs, was brave enough to personally test hundreds of them, smart enough to document it all for the future and ended up finding some real drugs that are real winners. Plus he told everyone how to make these compounds. As long as you have the gear and a few years of chemistry education you can potentially make incredible, novel psychedelics for yourself.
It genuinely would surprise me if in 15-25 years the mental health field *wasn't* prescribing some of his drugs.
