sorry, first derivative gives the function of change, so you want the maximum value of that function, so you need to take second derivative, and find the root there.

If I am understanding the problem right, after you have the gradient you have to determine its length (because its length is the value of the ascent). You know how to calculate the length of a vector (I hope). That gives you a scalar function and now you have to find its maxima through the usual means (partial derivatives are zero, Hessian matrix, etc.)
