I thought it was just a convention we invented. We just made the shit up for our own convenience. Saying we've proved there are 3 dimensions is like saying we've proved 1 foot equals 12 inches.
Anyway, space is curved anyway. How can you have 3D space, like you'd find on a Cartesian graph, if the axis are also warped and curved? Sure you can get away with this on paper, or just explain it away as negligible for current needs, but on a universal scale, how do you explain it away? If anything it'd say a curved spaces proves the dimensional of our universe is not constant, but fluctuates locally.
