>>14242461The school this professor teaches at has about 1200 undergrad students and that's not because they're selective about admissions. Lots of small private schools like it are slowly dying off. Their physical plant doesn't shrink when the student population does but the cost of maintenance creeps up every year. Older generous retirement plans handed out to professors and administrators during the good times are now a heavy yoke on the school budget.
When tuition is already more than double that of nearby public universities with better academic reputations, raising tuition more becomes self defeating as it runs off more students. If you're in the school's administration, you really have only two choices: reduce the cost of administration or reduce the cost of instruction. Administrators aren't going to cut themselves out so they keep professor salaries low. Since there are too many academics fighting over too few professorships, it's not difficult to find someone willing to take the job at the "low" salary in the $60k range.
He knows guys teaching at other schools with larger enrollments and better academic are making double what he makes. He's jealous of them but since he has no accomplishments in the field, he has no chance at any of those professorships. There are hundreds of more qualified professors than he is. So he seethes about how unfair the world is for not recognizing his value.
Then he walks past a sign showing a higher salary for someone who works in fast food. He knows he's better than fast food workers! Without giving much thought to the difference between a minimum wage cashier and a store manager, he lashes out. It's an insult to his ego to see that mouth breathing morons in fast food are making more than him!
In the past, he would have ranted to his fellow nobody professors at his nothing school and that would have been the end of it. Now we have social media, allowing retarded elitists like him to make fools of themselves.
