At one time the Earth and the stars visible to the eye was the entirety of the Universe. Then with the telescope Humans discovered it was much bigger. But even still we thought of the Milky Way as being the entire Universe, we had no idea what those faint smudges of light were other than guessing they were gas clouds perhaps, but within our galaxy. It was only quite recently that Humans using modern telescopes were able to resolve these into other distant galaxies, and just like that, our Universe became immensely bigger. With each succeeding leap in science and technology the Universe becomes bigger. I would posit the idea that if Humans continue to progress we will discover structures, or the effects of structures, which will make the present Universe seem tiny by comparison. My guess is it will be turtles all the way up with never a resolution.
Likewise, regarding the beginning of the Universe, we will discover, by inference or by direct evidence gleaned from some new marvelous technology presently undreamed of, points of origin which are continuously pushed back in time. Using the present Big Bang theory as an example, we will likely find out mechanisms of existence which resulted in the Big Bang, if that theory is indeed correct, but which have prior conditions and existence as yet beyond our ability to discern, or perhaps even to comprehend at this state in our evolution. It is my guess that for every leap in Human understanding and technological ability we will always find prior forms of existence. And like the size of the Universe, we will never be sure if we have reached the final turtle.
From that we can assume only one of two things. That the Universe is finite in some sense or infinite. But the thing is this: We will never fucking know. And that drives people so crazy they turn to religion. The dumb cunts.
