This is especially crucial in my career in Computer Science. Going beyond undergrad is something for those that want to teach because it would ALWAYS be a negative in your career. In a school you see theory, which helps you learn quicker, but is ultimately useless in the practical world.
For anything more advanced, you are supposed to learn by yourself and prove it with a good résumé. Note that companies usually only ask for good experience, good colleges dont bring much. Even college is often optional these days.
Worse, you cannot waste years. The older you are, the harder it is to get a job. I know people that never went to college and thus managed to sneak past me. Not common though! Most dont have enough discipline. But common enough.
