You are participating in a teleportation experiment.
You are accidentally teleported to a random location in the Universe, far outside of this solar system. You are not even sure if you are in the same galaxy. You encounter a being there that is intelligent enough to freely communicate with you.

How do you describe the location of Earth, in such a way that they can find it, to get you home?

Unless this alien can travel FTL, the chances of being able to get back are pretty close to zero. Not just because of the distance but because of the expansion of the universe causing places to be physically unreachable.

there is no real way to succeed here. the universe is so absurdly big that any description i can give of the milky way will, even after getting as specific as i possibly can, will also apply to hundreds of millions of other galaxies. any description of the local group i can give would apply to hundreds of thousands of other galactic groups. the only place i can give a singular description of, one which is so specific that there is virtually no chance of it applying elsewhere, is our solar system.

unless they have a catalogue of most solar systems in the universe, there is no real way for them to ever find my home. the closest i could ever get would be trying to describe the location of the virgo supercluster relative to the Bootes void, then the local group within that cluster, then the milky way within that group. once its been narrowed down to the milky way its relatively easy

If it doesn't know about the culture and fundamentals behind my language, how can it communicate with me? I could tell it milky way galaxy near some landmark, but how would it know what the milky-way or a galaxy is?

Only chance is constellation positions, hopefully there will be a constellation that you can find from your position that would help approximate where. Assuming you had a photographic memory of all the stars in the sky around us, the chance is still miniscule, not even factoring in any technical limitations. You're asking to solve a hypothetical, imaginary scenario with real world application - There is not enough known information yet to give you a tangible answer.

The major issue everyone is overlooking is that if you're in some random location in the universe, their observation of our galaxy will be highly dependent on how far away it is, the further away, the further in the past they will see it.
Not only do you need to know enough to pinpoint Earth as it is now, you need to be able to identify it at some unknowable time in the past.

lmao yeah but then how many galaxies have collided in the universe? the problem with the OP is that the universe is so big that a random location might as well be a completely different universe. This is compounded by the fact that every point of the universe appears to be the center of the universe thanks to everything being at the same place during the big bang.

Now if teleportation is possible it also means that there exists some kind of receptacle for teleportation, so maybe this receptacle has a trace about the orientation from which you came, but who knows, might be very frequented and might perhaps try to encrypt it or keep the places anonymous, who knows, but perhaps some other device has some information about the incoming information traffic, but maybe for that you need some security clearance, but might be too hard to learn alien language especially for someone who wasn't born there so it might be complicated to get a better position but maybe some alien could help you.
Now if you were to describe the Earth, you'd have to find a way to communicate possible its chemical composition, from the things that you know that exist in Earth, although albeit it might be complicated if the planet where you were teletransported does not have it, but by the very premise of it, it might be that there is such a thing as oxygen and a way to keep you alive, like organic matter. Or you might have greater luck thinking about the milky way, the orion branch, etc etc.

If you know a number of galaxies and their location as it appears from earth, the first step would be to locate our galaxy.
Then try to figure the position of earth by using a set of constellations that you know the position of.

If you don't know these, or the alien doesn't have a proper map of the universe you are basically fucked.

If I had a big brain or a shizo copy of the internet on me, I could use pulsars to precisely locate the Earth. Pulsars are pretty unique in their pulsing, relatively stable, very bright, and numerous enough to be useful for positioning. I remember there was even an article suggesting them as a general solution for interstellar navigation and possibly even terrestrial positioning.
