>>14201995To combat the novelty claim by pointing out there have been some tests in the last decade is missing the point.
The novelty argument implicitly argues there is an unknown safety profile.
The covid vaccines were rushed to market without undergoing long term safety testing.
I would be just as skeptical of a conventional vaccine that was this rushed.
Conventional and mRNA vaccines share the same concern about the safety/effectiveness of the antigens.
mRNA vaccines have additional potential modes of failure because they must have a way of delivering the mRNA to cells (the delivery mechanism might cause problems) and they actually hijack cells to produce their antigens (the hijacking might cause problems).
There are also potential problems arising from the type of virus and how widespread it is.
SARS-CoV-2 mutates quickly and is already widespread. Vaccinating into this pandemic runs the risk of inducing original antigenic sin which could leave the vaccinated less able to adapt to mutants than if they weren't vaccinated.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Original_antigenic_sinThere is also the problem of antibody dependent enhancement that was seen when people tried to develop a vaccine for the original SARS.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antibody-dependent_enhancementThen there is government mandate/coercion to get the vaccines which ought to require even more understanding of the safety and a better safety profile than usual.
