Finalizing my uni applications tonight,
can't decide between Medicine or Computer Engineering.
Anyone had a similar decision to make?
Why did you choose one over the other?
This decision will define what I do for most of my life, I honestly can't decide. On one hand being a surgeon sounds great, my fathers a surgeon and it pays very well.
On the other tech is the future and becoming skilled in cybersecurity sounds great too.
What do I do /sci/

If you want to be a scientist in any field in this day and age, you need to major in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, then you can think about wheter to graduate in Medicine or Computer Engineering

If you just want to work with one or the other area, just reproducing what others tell you and having a hard time finding out new things and defending them, then go with what you would like to be doing 20 years from now

"Pays very well" isn't a real motivation when it comes to doing pre-med, getting into med school, and doing well. Unless you have something that motivates you than the money, even if it's a decent-but-not-great interest in the material, it'll be really hard to justify undergrad + studying for MCAT + extracurriculars + EMT + med school + residency.

Cybersec is not exactly the same field as engineering, but there's some crossover. But yes, there's a lot of exciting things happening in the CmpE/CS space.

So if you are dead set on being a doctor and think it's at the very least interesting, I'd say commit to medicine. Otherwise, CmpE is way more flexible as far as career options, especially if you're unsure of exactly what it is you want to do. You can even take an interest into medical devices, which puts you close to medical care anyway!

neither of these fields are crypto, and they're certainly not synonymous with muh software. Companies have tried to dumb down the standards to get as much cheap labor as possible, but an actual computer engineer, computer scientist (not an undergrad, but typically post-grad), or even a software engineer who isn't just a dev, are worth their weight in gold and aren't easily replaced with codemonkeys. There's a reason for why the (actual) CS job pool is small, but it's heavily gated by privileged degrees and evidence of prior work. The guys who do this at google:

Ah, good to know. Nonetheless, I'm sure you have an analogous and extensive system for training doctors in graduate level education. All I'm asking you to do is examine the opportunity cost. Do it if you're even marginally passionate about it past the money or prestige. But without even a little passion, it's really hard to justify.

If you have to think about it for more than 5 minutes, go into CS.
Yeah surgeons make a lot of money but if you work 90 hour weeks coding you will make even more.
Only pursue medicine if it is the only thing you are interested in doing because you will be suicidal before you even get a BSc otherwise.

Or, you're thinking about becoming a practitioner which would be more fulfilling but far, far more demanding. Both of these don't require much thinking in the way of science or math, you're just learning the methods of whatever it is you study.
If you go the computer engineering route, then the schooling will be much harder but you'll actually be doing science and math. If I had to choose, I'd pick the engineering route, but that's simply because waking up knowing I have to go and cut someone open or tell unhealthy people to make better decisions sounds like shit, but I knew an anesthesiologist who loved his job (because he's rich and didn't do shit but work long hours)

You should be aware that you don't have to go into pre-med to go to medical school. Pre-med just packages a bunch of common med-school req'd classes together so you know what to take. If there's something you already know you want to specialize in, you may want to focus in that area. E.g., if you want to understand pharmacology really well you should go into Biochemistry instead, tack on some med school req's, and cast off.

it doesnt really matter what you do, but a good foundation in mathematics and modelling with computers is key for any tech/data job and socializing with lots of people who are good at studying and taking their degrees seriously gives you a lot of networking opportunities later for grad school and having future advisors notice you.

i did CS and maths and looking back everything i learned in CS could've been self taught from a few key books whereas maths you really benefit from the tutors and interaction in lectures and the ceiling for maths is very high from fluid stuff that all engineers use to the pure numbers and topology that you need in physics, to statistics and modelling that becomes very important in chemistry and biomed.

the think with math is, you need to go all in because it's so broad you can easily lose yourself with other shit and the math nerds go hard so the competition is fierce.

in stuff like chemistry, physics, engineering is a lot of girls and gym bros who have no fucking clue what they are doing and you can just sit back and outthink them without trying. but then you likely have to become a teacher or a person who works really well in groups for large companies.

I did the double major and felt the opposite to be honest. I loved my analysis and algebra classes, and the problems my profs picked out were very good, but I feel like I could have self studied it. Meanwhile in CS, almost everything you care about is in a paper and not a textbook, and I feel very lucky for having sets of notes from profs with insider info on the canonical examples / key papers. This is very true in TCS and less so in systems CS.
