For thunderfoot science is just a job; making a difference doesn't matter. That's why he was content with working 9-5 every day on a dead-end science project because at the end of the day; as long as he could afford food, rent and his TV that's all that mattered.
Then seeing somebody who started bellow him go from having nothing to being one of the most important tech inventors in all of human history must tear at his heart tremendously. Because Musk sees science as something amazing that can bring humanity forward thunderfoot hates him because he makes thunderfoot self conscious.
