Is architecture (not engineering but design) a good field? Is it going to do anything for climate change adaptation or is it all just green washing?

Typical architects dont design much, 90% of their work is dealing with local authorities to pull building permits. This involves knowing design because they have to make changes to the design to stay within the regulations. Theres a new breed of specialized architecture technician that can do the same work with much less education, these will never win design awards, they will never design skyscrapers nor beautiful millionaire houses from the ground up but neither will 99% of architects.

This. Most architects spend their days on residential garages, kitchen expansions, and bedroom/livingroom additions. If you go to route of specializing in commercial spaces, you'll spend most of your career doing endless variations of strip malls, adjusting for the size and layout of each parcel but otherwise just stamping out cookie cutter designs.

adding to this thread with a similar question. Where can one end up working with a civil engineering degree? I want to have a general idea of where students end up working so I can have something to motivate me while I solve differential equations. residential, commercial, utilities? government jobs, general contractors?

Mainly a shift in building materials (like using more wood instead of steel and concrete).
But the posterchild "green" projects (the vertical forests in Milan) are just meme projects for rich yuppies.
