But that's one special case, in all other cases the derivative will go to zero in the direction that the curve tends to the asymptote, though again, not always monotonically.
The picture with the girl's speed decreasing is a better description of the curve-asymptote relationship in all cases except orthogonal, and it is no worse for orthogonal asymptotes.
