Root mean square of a simple sine wave y = sin(x) should be 1/sqrt(2), I think, since sin^2(x) = (1-cos(2x))/2.
Mean of the absolute value of sin(x) should be the same as the average value of sin(x) from x=0 to pi, which should be ((-cos(pi)- (-cos(0))/pi = 2/pi, which is a little smaller than 1/sqrt(2).
These will vary for different shape waves. I think rms and mean absolute value are equal for square waves.

If you look at the formula of the RMS value, you integrate over a period and divide by the period. Then you take the square root of that value.
If you were to consider the mean value of the module, then you integrate the square of the module over a period, take the square root and then, divide by the period. There is a factor of (1/sqrt(T)) of difference between both values.
